A few suggestions about the forum portion. Have the member name of the topic starter listed as well as the member who had the lastest post.
Also, instead of having a completely different window for a reply have a reply box so that you can still read the previous posts when replying.

Idea #2 I like alot. Idea #1 I am not sure about since there is a question of space. Do you think it would really make a big difference to people?
Although with the 2nd idea also there is a space question - where to put the reply entry box, since the message list can run pretty long. Any thoughts?
