I have had good success with pot luck parties in the past. In fact they are my favorite kind, for a number of reasons. For one thing, it attracts motivated guests who are not there just to mooch. Also, the food is always excellent and infinitely better than the usual chips and dip or appetizers with dip. And, you know you are getting dinner at a potluck, so you don't have to decide whether to have appetizers for dinner at the party, or eat dinner first and then eat a bunch of appetizers when you don't have an appetite any more.
